The Appraisal Institute of Canada - Ontario (AIC-ON) was established in 1971 as the leading voice for the appraisal industry in the province. Our members complete approximately 500,000 third-party appraisals on an annual basis, representing $754 billion worth of property.

The 2,600 AIC-ON appraisers in the province provide an essential service for the financial and housing sector. Our members are a core component of the real estate industry, connecting with brokers, real estate agents, businesses, and homeowners every single day across the province.

Mission

AIC ON empowers its members to excel as trusted, leading valuation experts through professional development, advocacy and community.

Vision

A future where our members adapt and thrive in the ever-evolving real estate and valuation industry.

Our Board of Directors

AIC Ontario’s Board of Directors represent the interests of Ontario’s members. They share their in-depth sector knowledge and expertise to help strengthen the association and advocate for a vital appraisal industry.

The Board of Directors governs in accordance with the Strategic Plan, articles of incorporation, by-laws, provincial and federal legislation. Directors are elected by eligible members and serve two-year terms.

Our Committees

Board committees play a vital role in helping the board fulfill its responsibilities efficiently and effectively. By focusing on specific areas such as governance, finance, or advocacy, our committees allow for deeper exploration and discussion of key issues. They bring together board members—and external advisors—with relevant experience or interest, enabling more informed analysis and recommendations. This structure enhances oversight, supports strategic decision-making, and ensures the board’s work is thorough, collaborative, and aligned with the organization’s mission.

Our History

While the Ontario Association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada was officially established with the signing of its provincial charter by the National Governing Council in 1971, its roots trace back to a passionate group of members in the 1960s.

In the mid-1960s, the Appraisal Institute of Canada commissioned Dr. Samuel Martin of the University of Western Ontario’s business school to review the Institute’s structure and provide recommendations. His report emphasized the importance of strong provincial associations. In response, the National Governing Council approved a motion in 1968 that led to the creation of the Ontario Association of Chapters—the first provincial association of the Appraisal Institute of Canada.

The founding members were M.W. (Merv) Hall, William (Bill) Button, Harold Croft, Mac Hunter, and W.H. (Wally) Reimer. The first meeting of the provincial council took place in early 1968, followed by the first annual conference in Toronto in 1969. The official provincial charter was signed in June 1971.

The Ontario Association's first office was located in leased space from the Ontario Real Estate Association. The association quickly grew, reaching a peak membership of 2,617 in 1976—close to today’s membership of approximately 2,560.

Today, the Ontario Association remains the largest provincial association affiliated with the Appraisal Institute of Canada, with 14 chapters and its office in Toronto.
